Our presenter for this meeting will be Mike Stebritz. Mike’s talk will be:

“Thoughts Before You Click The Shutter”.

Mike holds many positions in the areas camera clubs and is an officer in the Colorado Council of Camera Clubs. Mike is a veteran in the world of programs that involve judging and will provide friendly and non-intimidating view of such. Attend, so you can pass judgment on judging, or be judged, or watch the rest of us being judged. There are no winners or losers, just learners.

Competition

This month we will be having both PRINTS and DIGITAL SLIDES competition.

Only two competition categories for Monday 5/14: Landscape and Open. Up to 2 entries in each category, in digital slides and in prints, for a total of 4. All prints, color and monochrome, are considered as a single media at this time. Digital slides (projected images) can be in color or monochrome as well.

The landscape category can include any type scenics like wilderness, mountains, red rocks, waterscapes, waterfalls, cityscapes; any season of the year; any time of day or night. Can be enhanced and manipulated (post-processed), such as done in Nik, Painter, Photoshop or other software, but must not lose it’s identity as a landscape in judging it’s aesthetics in less than 5 seconds.

The open category is all other than landscapes. No limit on post-processing, even a landscape that is not recognizable as a landscape is OK.

Prints

Write your name and title of your image on the back, in the upper left hand corner.  Bring your prints by 6:15PM latest.

Jeff Johnson will be presenting “Digital Workflow”.

Setting up a digital workflow can be a simple matter but usually stops us in our tracks! It is so very important to the success of our passion or business and it can directly relate to our continued enjoyment of photography.

I will share with you an overview of a digital workflow that has made it easy and fun for my digital photography success. We’ll also cover some of the tips & techniques that I use regularly to create unique fine art images. I will show you some of the software plug-ins I use such as NIK Software and Topaz. I will also discuss file sizes, resizing, file formats and more.

I will be talking about Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS5. You do not need to be using these softwares as you will see the overall process, which will allow you to integrate these ideas into the software and process you already use. Or, you may just want to trash everything you know and start from scratch… your choice!!

The 2nd Annual Colorado Photography Festival will be held from August 10-16, 2012. Eight of the nation’s premier photographers will give instruction in the classroom and in the field on numerous aspects of professional photography, from capturing your images to optimizing them in Lightroom. This year’s instructors are:

Glenn Randall, Russ Burden, Marc Muench, Grant Collier, Colby Brown, Mark S Johnson, Stephen G Weaver and Dan Ballard.

This year looks like it will be an action packed week that includes a seminar, workshops and classroom events. This event is taking place right on our doorstep, with excellent speakers. Seminars are located on Auraria campus, workshops are held at different locations.

The the Competition Meeting, that is the 2nd Monday of the month (April 9), we have the following program:

“Pre-Processing”

Russ Burden, our guest speaker, will be presenting “Pre-Processing”. Russ will present “Our Western National Parks and Natural  Areas”. Following the presentation, he will give us insight on what his thought process was. i.e. composition, exposure as we discuss his landscape images.

Russ has presented at previous club meetings. He is the owner of Russ Burden Nature Photo Tours and conducts photo workshops around the country. Refer to the Speakers Forum for details about Russ.

Competition

This will be a COMPETITION night, so bring up to three each: color and/or monochrome (black & white) prints, and a flash drive (for now) with digital slides for projection. This is a total of up to six (6) images. We’re combining color and monochrome for now, but it will change later. There is one little hitch though. This time we’ll have only assigned subjects that we’ll be showing.  Prints and slides must fit one of three subject categories, or they will be rejected. You can enter in one or all three categories, but no more than 6 total combined entries. The three categories are: Landscapes, People, Creative. Landscapes can include waterscapes, clouds, mountains, fall colors, etc. but not close-up, still life, animals, flowers, architectural, etc. unless it’s just a minor part of the image. People can be a portrait or any number of people, indoors or outdoors, sports, etc. Creative for this definition is to be something that’s not recognizable, or barely so. It can be subjects such as patterns, creative composites, distorted or streaked images, etc. Be really creative.

The theory behind assigned subjects is that it’s easier to judge like subjects. It’s hard for the poor judge to decide which picture is better when comparing, say a person portrait, a flower, and an elk, even an apple against an orange. With assigned subjects, you don’t have the “apples vs oranges” problem. One other little thing, you also reduce the disparity between levels of experience. An experienced photographer is not necessarily as good in selection and treatment of all subjects. Many subjects are not his or her forte.

Unlike our Exhibitions at the 4th Monday meetings, Competitions are limited to members only. Right now it’s still practice, but later when this gets going we’ll be keeping the scores, and there will be winning image recognitions and awards. You can enter if you join at the meeting, or pay your dues if you are a member renewing your membership. So bring a check for $25 or cash.

During the meeting, several post-processing and image capture apps were demonstrated. We made a 3-image panorama with the AutoStitch app on the iPhone. Here is the image:

You may wonder why the audience are not looking at the camera. Well, they were looking intently at the projector screen to the left of the presenter while the app was stitching the images!

Another app that was demonstrated was the Camera Art FX app.
