Our images are an outward depiction of our inner being. They reveal who we really are and our life philosophy at the time in which they were produced. Are you pleased with the message they convey?

Join Weldon as he discusses his philosophy and the techniques he uses to capture the essence of his wild brothers and sisters as he sees them. For more information on Weldon, follow him here…

We had a great start for the newest additions to our club activities, the image capture programs and the competitions. Our first Monday program was held on February 13. The capture program was a workshop on eBay and Macro photography.

We had tables set up with displays and different types of lighting. People were using all types of close up lenses and accessories such as macros, extension tubes, and close-up filters. Even some experimental work was being performed by some. Here are some images that were taken with our smartphone camera.

Shooting small objects in a light tent brought by one of our members gives soft, even lighting, such as in this tabletop setup. The photographer got in close to fill the frame for a stunning image.

Shooting a small insect can be a learning experience, such as this group is discovering. You don’t need much in the way of a background or base, just a sheet of paper and natural room light can do it. A close up of the whole insect or it’s head can fill the frame to produce a fun to do and a surprising shot.

One of the members brought an egg to photograph. Believe it or not, there’s more to lighting it than meets the eye. Here this photographer is using a close up lens and moving in close and personal to fill up the frame to show the sculptured dimples of a part of the shell.

Another way to shoot the egg is to bring everything in closer with a telephoto for a different effect. This shooter is in a tebowing position to get at eye level with the egg. Note the black continuous background that will make the white egg pop off the sceen or paper when done.

There was plenty to shoot at our image capture workshop. The still life “models”, backgrounds and lighting kept changing to keep everyone on their toes. It sure was more invigorating than staying home watching the boob tube.

These guys are really getting technical here. How much can there be to getting a competition quality macro shot anyway?

Here is one image that Our President made of a sample still-life that was setup.

As unaccustomed as this photographer is to shooting with a cell phone, such as this close up of one of our tiny subjects, it was a fun experiment. It was a grab shot, hand held with a HTC EVO 8 MG smart phone. I was covering the photo beat that night, and couldn’t resist shooting some of the goodies that everyone else was shooting.

Looks like a great image. Keep up the smartphone photography, Dick. It is lots of fun. Check out my website for some iPhone images – Match.

The second segment was a program and demonstration of projected image (digital slide) and print competition. Images brought in by participants were shown, judged and scored for education purposes, this time. There were helpful tips presented on creating competition quality images, with many done in the capture process. We plan on having some more practice sessions before it gets serious.

We had visitors and new members joining us in a fun and educational evening.

President

Hello Denver Photographers, We are kicking off this new year with some great new activities to give you more reasons to learn and enjoy your photography.

Hello Denver Photographers,

We are kicking off this new year with some great new activities to give you more reasons to learn and enjoy your photography.

In addition to our traditional digital programs, we are adding a monthly program series devoted strictly to:

Image capture: All to do with the camera; photography applications such as landscape, waterscape, animals (wildlife, pets), plants (flowers, trees), people, travel, architectural, sports, close-ups/macro, etc, etc. It will include capture techniques such as the power of composition, 3-D lighting, exposure control, creating fine art, photo equipment/selection & operation (still & video), etc, etc. This gives us twice as many educational programs per year as any other photo club in the metro area.

Our first capture session of the year will be on Monday, February 13. See below for details. It will be a hands-on workshop on ebaY and MACRO photography; so bring your camera, flashes, close-up glass, tripod, etc. ALSO, if you have an interesting small object to photograph, bring that too! We’ll provide the tables and backgrounds.

In addition to our popular exhibitions, we are re-introducing our original monthly image competitions:

Image competitions are not only a great learning tool like the exhibitions, but they offer other benefits as well. They give you another reason for your photography, and it’s great inspiration to strive to excel and advance in your art. Between our exhibitions and competitions we offer more in-club presentation opportunities than any other photo club in our area.

Our first competition session of the year on February 13 will be for learning and practice. We originally planned to start out with only projected images, but since this will be a learning session, let’s also bring prints. For this session, bring up to 5 images on a flash drive or thumb drive, and up to 5 prints (color, B&W, mounted, unmounted, even framed). This way, your own projected images and prints can compete with each other before they compete with someone else’s.

We were lucky enough to secure our meeting room for a second night each month this year. We’ll have an extra couple hours per month to add these two great activities to our agenda.

It will be at the Lone Tree Civic Center in meeting Room-B. These 2nd Monday sessions will start February 13. Our 4th Monday sessions will start this year on Monday, February 27. Both sessions will run from 6:30PM to 9:00PM.

We will be working and improving our activities throughout the year, and will be announcing more exciting new things to help make your photography even better. This year, make a resolution to start attending all the new programs, the exhibitions, the competitions. Give your photography a new life!

Dick York-President
Denver Digital Photo Club

Hello Club Members,

I hope everyone had a great holiday, and that you are looking with anticipation for a great year as well. The nice thing about the beginning of a new year, right now, is that this is a good time to make some new resolutions and plans for the future. You could decide to have more fun with your camera gear and take more pictures, or to improve your skills in one or more photo processing programs to take your work to the next level, or even to expand your hobby into new horizons.

In looking back not only at last year, but where our club has been since it started as the first camera club in our metro area specializing in digital photography. A lot has changed in our local photographic community of camera clubs. From the time when I’ve been told that digital is not photography to today when it’s commonplace. All, or most, of the clubs slowly evolved from film orientation to digital today. Denver Digital Photo Club was unique in it’s 100% digital orientation since it started, but now we must look at the big picture for new opportunity to recapture our differentiation, and to excel.

I would like an opportunity to present a plan to renew our group into a photography club to better serve the needs of today’s digital photographers, our present members and new members to be. It calls for recreating a new organizational model from a digital specialty club to a full fledged, full service photography club to meet a more diversified base. The new model evolves a number of innovative services to add to our traditional ones to engage more of our members and many new photography enthusiasts.

We have a meeting room reserved at the Lone Tree Civic Center for the evening of Monday January 9, 2012 at 7PM, Room B. This will be a strategic plan meeting and all members are encouraged to attend so you know the new organizational concept first hand and can participate in the discussion.

Check the Meetings page for location details.
